The Women's Benevolent Society was established in 1803 to promote the missionary activities and the social and spiritual life of the women of the First Church of Christ in Longmeadow and is thought to be the oldest continuously active women's group of its kind in the country. This group engages speakers on various topics and has been holding Christmas fairs since as far back as the 1930's. The annual Christmas on the Green Fair, held on the first Saturday in December is a fun and festive day for both church members and the wider community. This is the group's major fundraising project, after which all the proceeds are donated to local community organizations.
Christmas Fair
Help us meet our goal
The Christmas on the Green Fair is a community favorite Christmas Spirit filled day of shopping, food, music, and Santa! We serve beverages and home baked goods in our morning cafe and a delicious sit-down lunch in the afternoon. With live music and free photo ops in Santa's beautiful parlor, this makes for a fun and festive day! As for the shopping, we treasure our history; we've been hosting Christmas fairs featuring handcrafted items since at least as far back as the 1930’s and continue to do that today! Our homemade candy, extensive cookie and bake sale, and other handcrafted Items in our First Church Originals department set our fair apart from other vendor-based Christmas fairs in the area. Members and friends generously donate beautiful sewn, knitted, crocheted, and other handmade crafts, helping us preserve this cherished tradition! In addition, we also collect, carefully curate, and showcase antique to new home goods, Christmas decorations, art, jewelry and accessories, toys, books, and “attic treasures,” giving shoppers a wide variety of beautifully displayed unique and interesting gifts for purchase. We consistently distribute over $14,000 after this event to local community service organizations. This number depends on our donors, volunteers, and shoppers, and we are humbled each year by their generosity. We are very grateful to all who contribute. Please come shopping at the fair!
